2018 HHR Scholarship Application- Deadline April 16, 2018


The Houston Housing Authority is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the 2018 Carmen V. Orta Scholarship. To apply, simply complete an application (click here to download), write an essay as described in the guidelines and instructions below, provide two letters of recommendations, proof of community service, SAT or ACT scores and a current transcript.

Guidelines and Instructions For Carmen V. Orta Scholarship

The Houston Housing Authority is pleased to announce that Carmen V. Orta scholarship applications will be accepted from January 1, 2018, until April 16, 2018. To apply, simply complete an application, write an essay as described below, provide two letters of recommendations, proof of community service, SAT or ACT scores and a current transcript.

Completed packets should be either emailed to ddixon@housingforhouston.com or mailed to Donna Dixon, Special Assistant to the President & CEO, 2640 Fountain View 3rd Floor Houston, TX 77057.  

Applications will not be accepted after April 16, 2018.  Incomplete scholarship packets will not be considered. All items must be included with scholarship application.   

Eligibility

  • Must be a resident of public housing or the housing choice voucher program in good standing
  • Must be on the lease
  • Must be a full-time student in good standing
  • Must have a GPA of at least 2.5 or show academic promise and meaningful objectives
  • Must have performed at least 12 hours of community service
  • Applications must be received by April 16, 2018; no exceptions will be made

Awards

Funds will be mailed directly to the college or university upon receipt of a letter of acceptance or verification of enrollment.  Funds must be disbursed by December, 2018.

  • Four year College or University outside of Houston (living in dorm) - $3,000
  • Four year College or University within city limits (living at home) - $2,500
  • Community or Junior College - $1,000

Application checklist - Please make sure the items below are included with the scholarship application

  • Application
  • Current High School transcript (Unofficial is acceptable)
  • Two letters of recommendation, one from a community leader and one from a high school instructor
  • Proof of community service
  • A typed essay of at least 300 words describing background, community involvement, educational goals and career objectives
  • Copy of SAT or ACT scores
