Mark Thiele became the Interim President and CEO of the Houston Housing Authority (HHA) in January 2020. Prior to that he served as the Senior Vice President of the HHA and was responsible for oversight of Program Operations, Real Estate, Investment and Development, Policy and all of the Agency’s support functions, including Finance, Legal, Procurement, Human Resources and Information Technology. For the last year and a half, Mark worked with HHA’s outstanding team of Vice Presidents to ensure that the 200+ staff of HHA worked to be the premier provider of quality, affordable housing in Houston.
Mark has a demonstrated career in affordable housing, spanning two decades. He previously served as the Vice President of the award-winning Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) Program at HHA, one of the largest voucher programs in the country, for eight years. In that role, Mark supervised over 120 staff dedicated to providing quality, affordable housing options for more than 17,000 Houston households via the regular HCV, VASH, Mainstream, NED, DHAP-Ike and Mod Rehab programs, as well as a plethora of initiatives funded by the City, County and other entities, including the innovative FEMA/GHF funded HousingForHarvey for precariously housed Houstonians after the devastating storm. The HCV Department provides more than $150 million in housing subsidies annually and has been certified as a Section 8 Management Assessment Program (SEMAP) High Performer each of the last ten years.
Mark currently serves as the Chair of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) Board of Ethics and Credentialing Trustees (BECT), serves as the current Senior Vice President of Southwest NAHRO and the Immediate Past President of Texas NAHRO and is a proud member of the Board of the National Public Housing Museum (NPHM).
