Dr. Alton Smith was appointed as a New Houston Housing Authority Commissioner (Position Two) on February 16, 2024, for a term to expire January 31, 2026. Dr. Smith formerly served on the Lone Star College System Board of Trustees from November 2014 through November 2020. Four of those years, he served as Board Chair. He was also a member of the Aldine Independent School District Board of Trustees from 2004 through 2014. He held all board officer positions during his tenure at Aldine Independent School District. Dr. Smith and his wife Marjorie (56 years) have 2 children (Tisha and Todd). Tisha is a school Counselor in Conroe Independent School District. Todd is the owner of Regalmag.com.
After Completing his undergraduate degree (Economics/Math) from Southern University in May 1968, Alton spent 30 years in the private sector in human resources with Shell Oil Company. During his tenure with Shell Oil Company, he completed his MBA degree and his certification to teach Special Education (K-12). Becoming a certified teacher fulfilled a promise made to his mother and a personal dream.
Following a beautiful and successful career with Shell Oil Company, Alton became an educator in 1998. He spent 14 years with Goose Creek Consolidated School District and Klein Independent School district as a classroom teacher, department chair, Assistant Principal. Principal and Director of Human Resources. During this 14 year period he completed his certifications school counseling and principalship and his Ed.D degree from Sam Houston State University. In addition, I have been an adjunct professor with Houston Community College, Lone Star College System, Sam Houston State University, University of Saint Thomas and Prairie View A and M University
Alton is a member of the Living Word Fellowship Church (Dr. Paul Canning-Pastor), Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., Southern University, Texas Southern University and Sam Houston State University Alumni Associations, Greater Inwood Partnership and various other clubs and organizations.
Alton wants to be known as a person that is passionate about education and training and giving back to society.
